Baki: The Complete Watch Order Guide

Baki is a very popular shonen anime both in Japan and abroad. Based on a manga of the same name, the anima follows the story of Baki Hanma, who trains with a laser-like focus to surpass his father, Yujiro Hanma, the world’s strongest fighter.

Against Baki are five of the world’s most aggressive and brutal death row convicts who are gearing up for a big fight. The convicts are not in it to defeat Baki though.

Baki The Complete Watch Order Guide

Their goal is to taste defeat; their unrivaled strength and talent have made them bored with life, and they’ve turned to Baki in the hopes that he can completely overwhelm and demolish them.

Other underground martial art warriors arrive to fight alongside Baki during this crisis, including Kaoru Hanayama, Gouki Shibukawa, Retsu Kaioh, and Doppo Orochi. Baki and his friends are pitted against vicious death row convicts in an epic fight.

Like many animes, Baki has had serval series and OVAs.

While this complicates the watch order already, what can make it even more difficult for newcomers is that not only is there the original series to contend with, but there is also a Netflix adaptation of the story as well.

The Netflix adaptation is currently on season 2, though there is a high chance that it will get renewed for a third season if it does well.

To differentiate between the two, the Baki anime is titled “Baki the Grappler”, while the Netflix show is simply called “Baki”. For a bit more confusion, Baki The Grappler is also the name of an OVA of this series from 1994.

With that in mind, here is the release order of all Baki content, as well as the perfect watch order if you want to watch everything to do with Baki.

Though he has received excellent training from his mother, Emi Akezawa in martial arts, it is not enough for him to beat his father. So he goes on a journey to improve his strength and skill.

Along the way, he meets new friends and enemies and keeps training so that he can win in a final showdown against his father.

Baki The Grappler – Season 2: Maximum Tournament Saga – 2001

Continuing the story, this season sees Baki encounter the Tokugawa Underground fighting ring. Here, 38 of the world’s best fighters have gathered together for the ultimate fighting competition, and Baki is one of them.

He has to prove himself in a fight just to be respected and earn a spot in the area, but now he has to fight for his life to win the tournament.

Baki The Grappler: The Ultimate Fighter – OVA – 1999

In this OVA, Baki fights a follower of Doppo Orochi, one of the most talented and powerful martial arts masters in the series. During the fight, he cates the eye of Doppo himself, who is very interested in the odd fighting style that Baki uses.

Doppo and another of his followers Kiyosumi Katou decide to pay Baki a visit, but when they find Baki he is in a fighting area preparing for battle against lethal karate master Koushou Shinogi.

Baki – Season 1: Most Evil Death Row Convicts Saga – 2018

This 26 episode series follows Baki after he has won the notorious Tokugawa Underground Tournament.

As he continues on his journey to get stronger, a tournament runner-up, Tokugawa Mitsunari, tells Baki that five extremely deadly death row inmates have escaped prison and are on their way to Japan.

Baki is warned that his fighting skills and talents have become so well known that the criminals will seek him out and challenge him to a fight, possibly to the death.

Baki: Most Evil Death Row Convicts Special Anime – OVA – 2016

This very short OVA is not with the watch according to some die-hard Baki fans, as it mainly focuses on how the inmates from the previous season escaped prison in the first place. But it is still an enjoyable watch.

The story follows five prison inmates from all around the world. They break out of jail at the same time and all make their way to Japan for an underground fighting tournament.

Baki must navigate the no-rules combat that these criminals use in their fighting ring.

Baki – Season 2: Great Chinese Challenge Saga/Godlike Clash of the Kids Saga – 2020

Baki has been greatly weakened from his last battle, so much so that there is a chance the great fighter could die to his injuries. There is only one thing that could cure Baki, but the only way to get this is if he participates in the Raitai Tournament.

This will be the hardest tournament Baki has ever taken part in. Taking place in China, it brings together the strongest fighters from all around the world, and Baki must beat them all to get the cure.

One of these fighters is his father, and it may be their final showdown.
