So if you have ever wondered what the five-leaf clover grimoire is, then you have come to the right place. In the following article, we are going to take a look at the grimoire and its importance in the series, as well as what it is and what it can do…

Overview

If you’re in a rush and don’t have time to read the entire article, then we have provided a condensed version of our answer in the section below:

According to the manga, five-leaf clover grimoires were once four-leaf clover grimoires before their owners succumbed to hatred and despair.

Because of this, the four-leaf clover on the cover of the grimoire grew an extra leaf, making the book a powerful conduit for anti-magic and devil activity.

If you want to learn more about the five-leaf clover grimoire and its connection to Asta, then you will find a more detailed history in the following section…

What Are Grimoires In Black Clover?

In the black clover universe, grimoires are books that contain powerful spells, which makes them an important tool in the magical arts. In fact, mages will use the raw power of grimoires to enhance their own abilities, thus allowing them to cast spells that would otherwise be impossible if they relied on their own natural talent.

When a mage is chosen by a grimoire, the book will contain very few spells and will continue to grow and develop as its owner’s magic evolves. Over time, the pages of the grimoire will be inscribed with the spells the mage has perfected, becoming a record of all the lessons the owner has learned.

Grimoire

In both the manga and anime, there are several kinds of grimoire available to mages, which include the following:

Three-Leaf Clover Grimoires

This class of grimoire is considered to be the most common in the clover kingdom, as it represents mages with a basic understanding of the craft.

Four-Leaf Clover Grimoires

This class of grimoire is seen as the hallmark of a truly exceptional mage, with the fourth leaf of the clover representing good luck and fortune.

Five-Leaf Clover Grimoires

This class of grimoire is considered to be very rare, with even experienced wizards having little idea of what the pages contain.

However, there are rumors that the fifth leaf of the clover houses a devil, something that was seemingly confirmed when Asta first discovered the grimoire and it revealed a demonic presence.

But who is Asta and what is his connection to the five-leaf clover grimoire? Everything you need to know and more can be found in the next section…

Who is Asta?

Asta is the main protagonist of the black clover anime and manga, who was raised in a church by Yuno, after his mother abandoned him on the steps. While every character in the black clover universe is born with magical powers, Asta did now show any talent in the magical arts and instead focused on increasing his physical strength.

It wasn’t until he encountered Revchi Salik that Asta would be given his own grimoire, which featured a black five-leaf clover on the cover. Because the insignia was covered with dirt, many people (including Asta) believed that the grimoire was safe, although somewhat unusual.

However, it would later be revealed that the five-leaf clover grimoire was a conduit of anti-magic and the home of a powerful devil. But in a shocking twist, Asta was able to control the dark spells within the book and even manipulate the demonic presence to do his bidding.

But what exactly is the five-leaf clover grimoire and where did it come from? The answers you seek can be found below…

The Five-Leaf Clover Grimoire

What is The Five-Leaf Clover Grimoire?

According to the manga, the five-leaf clover grimoire was once a four-leaf clover grimoire whose owner was consumed by hatred and despair. Because of this, the clover on the front of the book grew another leaf and the cover turned black. Following this, the grimoire became a powerful conduit for dark magic and was even capable of being possessed by a devil.

‘Five-leaf clover grimoires, also known as “Grimoires of Despair”, were originally four-leaf clover grimoires. When the owner of a four-leaf clover grimoire falls into utmost despair and develops huge hatred, an extra leaf appears on the grimoire transforming it into a five-leaf clover grimoire…’

Black Clover | Chapter 198

It is said that five-leaf clover grimoires can be used by devils to complete their manifestation, something that was confirmed when Asta’s grimoire was revealed to be the home of a powerful demonic being.

While Asta was able to tame the devil for a short period of time, it has become clear that the devil is also starting to take control of Asta’s body, which would complete its manifestation and release it into the world.

Who is The Devil?

But who exactly is the devil? In chapter 267, it was revealed that the devil was in fact called Liebe and that he is a low-ranking demon from the first level of the underworld. Despite his great power, Liebe was eventually tamed by Asta, who would use the devil’s magic to fuel his own black form.

Where Did The Five-Leaf Clover Grimoire Come From?

In the manga, it was later revealed that Asta’s grimoire was in fact the grimoire of despair, the book once owned by the elf mage Licht. Following the massacre of his clan, Licht fell into deep despair, which resulted in his transformation into a mindless demon.

After going on a rampage through the kingdom, Licht was defeated by the first magic emperor, with his grimoire seemingly being lost to the sands of time. Interestingly, the five-leaf clover grimoire did not disintegrate following the death of its master, which is a common factor shared by the books.

So there we have it, that is everything you need to know about the origins of the five-leaf clover grimoire. We hope that you found this article interesting and that you will use it to answer your black clover questions…
