Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! (Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions in English) is an anime based on a light novel series by the same name. The series is currently made up of two TV series, a few specials, a few web series, and a couple of movies.
While the story is generally believed to be complete, many fans are still hoping for another series or movie.
What Is Chuunibyou Demo Koi Ga Shitai! About?
Before we talk about the show, it’s a good idea that we understand what Chuunibyou is.
Chuunibyou is a word used by the Japanese to describe when a teenager develops delusions of grandeur. They want to stand out and act like they are the chosen ones. They often pretend they have secret knowledge or are in communication with a higher power.
Sometimes it is used as a friendly joke but sometimes the phrase is used as an insult.
Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! Plays with this idea.
The show is set in what appears to be a typical Japanese high school and the story follows Yuuta Togashi. Yuuta is incredibly embarrassed by the time that he spends “suffering” with Chuunibyou.
During this time he claimed to be possessed by the “Dark Flame Master”. He is so embarrassed by this that he travels a long way every day to go to a high school where no one knows who he is.
Yuuta thinks his suffering is behind him until he meets one of his new classmates – Rikka Takanashi. Rikka claims that she is possessed by the “Wicked Eye.”
Rikka has a dark and mysterious past that only makes Yuuta feel more drawn to her. Rikka requests that he help her find the “Ethereal Horizon” – a mystical realm she believes holds someone close to her.
In this show, we join Yuuta on a heartwarming adventure where he must discover what is real, what is delusion, and why some people want to hide away from the real world.
Chuunibyou Demo Koi Ga Shitai! – The Light Novels
Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! Is based on a series of 4 lite manga novels with the same name. They were released between June 2010 and December 2017.
They were written and drawn by Nozomi Ōsaka. The first volume won an honorable mention in the Kyoto Animation Award competition in 2010.
Osaka has also written a series of light novels called Adachi and Shimamura which has also been made into an anime. Her other light novel series is called Nanana’s Buried Treasure.
Nanana’s Buried Treasure was turned into an anime but it began telling the story halfway through the first novel and left audiences confused.
Fans generally acknowledge that the anime and the light novels are very different.
Firstly, the anime has a much bigger cast of characters. Characters like Dekomori and Kumin do not exist in the light novels.
The anime also plays around with the chronology of the light novels. Things happen in a different order. Some believe this makes the anime easier to follow while others disagree.
The first series of the anime roughly follows the story of the first light novel. And the second series roughly follows the story of the second light novel. However, the movies and web series bring in their own stories and bear little to no resemblance to the light novels.
There is a third and fourth volume of the light novels, but there are not any anime adaptations of either of the stories.
By the time the second season of the anime came out, neither the third nor the fourth light novel had been published. The fourth light novel was published one year before the final film was released.
The movie Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! Movie: Take On Me (2018) ends in a different way to the final light novel.
