Does Boruto Have The Byakugan, Tenseigan, Or Jōgan?

Eye powers have for a long time been a staple of the Naruto Universe. Getting to see what new, awesome eye powers that Masashi Kishimoto can come up with – along with their devastating powers – is something that fans have loved to see since the very beginning.

There have been a lot of different eye powers throughout the history of the show, and he has always linked them to some of the most important protagonists and antagonists in the Naruto Universe.

Ever since the story transitioned from the climax of Naruto: Shippuden into Boruto: The Next Generations – it became clear that new eye powers would likely emerge. Especially when it comes to the new characters.

Naruto Uzumaki never had eye powers – but since his Mother Hinata is a member of the Hyuuga clan, it would make sense that he would inherit some kind of eye power.

So you’ve seen the first few episodes of Boruto, or maybe you’ve gone a little longer and keep noticing his strange glowing eye power that randomly appears in times of need? What exactly is this eye power? What does Boruto have?

Does he have the Byakygan, the Tenseigan, or the Jogan? What exactly are all of these eye powers and how can you tell the difference between them? If you find yourself asking these questions – you’ve come to the right article!

Below is a short explanation of each different eye power, as well as what they do and whether or not Boruto possesses or will possess them in the future! So let’s begin and see what kind of power Boruto will have in the future of the series.

Does Boruto Have The Byakugan, Tenseigan, Or Jōgan

What Is A Dojutsu?

The word Dojutsu literally translates to ‘Eye Techniques’ and is the word used within the Naruto Universe to describe Jutsu (magical abilities) that use the eye as their conduit.

Most of these powers are passed down through blood – though some can be transplanted provided the shinobi in question has the required chakra as fuel.

Eye powers generally have abilities linked to sight – but that’s just the beginning! There are so many different effects that it is difficult to describe all of them in short – but the three great Dojutsu are known to be the Byakugan, the Sharingan, and the Rinnegan.

The Byagukan is native to the Hyuuga clan and the closest to Boruto Uzumaki, so we will cover this in more detail below. The Sharingan is native only to the Uchiha clan and therefore doesn’t have much to do with Boruto.

Finally, the Rinnegan is the most powerful and rarest of the great three, only manifesting in a few characters in the story’s history.

What Is The Byakugan?

The Byakugan is the Kekkei Genkei (Inherited jutsu) of the Hyuuga Clan. Although it is generally thought to be the weakest of the three great Dojutsu, it is still a very strong ocular power that allows the user to see through surfaces, into the bodies of opponents as well as their chakra flow.

This makes the Byakugan user deadly in battle and able to see all around them and predict the opponent’s movements before they make them.

It could be expected that Boruto would inherit this Jutsu, as his sister and mother both have it as members of the Hyuuga clan. With Boruto though, it’s not that simple – as we will see below when looking at the other eye powers.

What Is The Tenseigan?

The Tenseigan is a particularly strange and rare eye power that looks very much like the power we see Boruto use in Boruto: The Next Generation. It’s important to note, however, that it is not the power that Boruto has.

The Tenseigan is an eye power that was only ever seen in Naruto the Last Movie. It is a combination of Byakygan and an Otsutsuki power, and it is very strong. It is fairly unlikely we’ll see this again in the series, though it could have some importance later in the series.

The Tenseigan is recognizable by its blue background, very faint flower pattern behind its deep blue pupil, and intense black outline. It looks very similar to the Jogan that we will cover below, though the extent of which is not known.

It is easily mistaken, and one of the less defined Dojutsu in the entirety of the series.

What Is The Jogan?

This is the power that Boruto Uzumaki has. The Jogan is the newest eye power in the series and extremely mysterious in nature. We see glimpses of it in the earliest episodes of the series, where it manifests without Boruto knowing or understanding it.

It is a part of his character that he hardly understands himself, and other characters are only just beginning to take notice of it.

The Jogan is mostly known by the Otsutsuki Clan – who are the main antagonists so far of the Boruto Storyline. It looks fairly similar to the Byakugan and the Tenseigan because of its light coloring.

The Jogan is recognizable with its pale blue background as well as its slightly darker blue pupil. When activated, it glows quite impressively, so it’s always easy to know when Boruto has it activated.

The powers of the Jogan are not yet well defined. So far we know that it has some similar powers to the Byakugan. We see Boruto able to track the flow of chakra of opponents and friends.

We get the idea that the Jogan will have a great power level attached to it, as members of the Otsutsuki clan have commented on it calling it ‘troublesome.’

At the beginning of Boruto, we see him as a teenager able to activate the Jogan at will. It is to be expected that this Dojutsu will be very important for power as he matures into an adult shinobi. The extent to which it will shape him is unknown – but it’s certainly exciting to consider the future!

Final Thoughts

So there you have it – Boruto Uzumaki has the Jogan. If you find yourself getting confused between the Jogan, the Tenseigan, and the Byakugan then you wouldn’t be the first – all of these eye powers look very similar.

It’s worth noting that this is all by design – the descendants of the Otsutsuki Clan have inherited the same kind of powers and they are all light in color.

We don’t yet really know what the Jogan is, but there’s a lot of speculation down to the translation of its name as the ‘Pure Eye.’ Is it possible that this Dojutsu could be the ultimate of them all?

Perhaps in Boruto Uzumaki, we see the manifestation of truly unique and rare power, the likes of which we’ve never seen before?

We’ll have to keep following the series to find out! We hope that this article has helped you understand a little bit more about Dojutsu, and wish you the best of luck wherever you are in the story!
