Every Dojutsu In The Naruto Universe

Eye powers, or ‘Dojutsu’ are one of the coolest aspects in all of Naruto. These ocular powers that give users an array of different powers are integral in the outcome of the story, as well as the fates and power levels of several different key characters.

Every Dojutsu In The Naturo Universe

Let’s face it – eye powers are awesome! And Kishimoto has done an incredible job at making them feel impactful and cool to watch or read in the anime and manga.

But the truth is, as a Naruto fan or a newcomer to the series it can be difficult to keep track of all of the different eye powers.

Sometimes when reading or watching it can be very difficult to know which power does what – there is a lot of crossover between them, and some are clearly more powerful than others.

That’s why we’ve written this article! Below is an extensive guide to every eye power in Naruto. We’ll take you through what each one is, what it looks like, what it does, and who has it in the story. We’ve also included some information that will help you to rank each eye power.

Of course, there are some aspects when rating power level that is completely subjective and fans like to argue, but we will give you an indication as to the kind of power level of each Dojutsu.

So let’s get into it! Here are all of the Dojutsu in the Naruto Universe.

Byakugan

The Byakugan is the second Dojutsu that the reader/watcher encounters in Naruto, and is one of the more common eye powers in the Hidden Leaf Village. Its name in Japanese means ‘white eye’ which also means ‘all-seeing eye.’

This is a dojutsu inherited by members of the Hyuga clan. We first see it used by the two characters Neji and Hinata, the former of which has great dominion over it.

The Byakugan is inherited by members of the Hyuga from birth, who are recognizable from their white, almost empty eyes.

When activated, the Byakugan causes intense stress around the eyes and brow, causing the user’s veins to pop out. Because of this, Hyuga members are easily recognizable and feared in the Hidden Leaf Village for their powers.

The Byakugan gives the user a great increase in vision, allowing them to see 260 degrees around themselves – aside from a small spot that is exploited by numerous opponents in the show.

As well as this, Byakugan can see through almost any object, including through the bodies of opponents. This allows Hyuga members to target ‘chakra points,’ which stops the flow of chakra through an enemy, causing their ninjutsu to be useless.

Hyuga also exploits their sight to be able to target the vital organs of opponents, hitting them with chakra-infused hand strikes to shut their bodies down.

Byakugan is one of the oldest Dojutsu in the Naruto Universe, stemming from the Otsutsuki clan, who have upgraded versions.

Though the Byakugan is an extremely powerful Dojutsu, it is not as powerful as others on this list, because its powers mostly stop at its ability to see. Other eye powers extend the user’s power levels in both Ninjutsu, Genjutsu, and Taijutsu.

Sharingan

This is the eye power that has captivated countless Naruto fans as they make their way through the series – the infamous Sharingan. It is first seen in the eye of Kakashi Hatake in the earliest episodes of Naruto and is one of the coolest and most extensive eye powers in all of Naruto.

The Sharingan is native to the Uchiha clan, with some members awakening the most basic version of the power. However, since the massacre of the Uchiha clan by Itachi Uchiha before the start of the story, there are only a few Uchiha left in the world – making the Sharingan a very rare power.

The Sharingan is by far one of the most powerful abilities in Naruto, because of its extreme versatility and opportunities to upgrade.

The Sharingan is recognizable by its red coloring, black circles, and black yin-and-yang tear-shaped symbols that rotate around its rings.

It changes in the pattern when Uchiha members are able to awaken the higher forms of it, though in this section we are just going to be covering the basic Sharingan.

Its powers are numerous. Firstly it allows the user to see chakra, including its source and type. It also allows the user intense clarity of sight, helping them to read body language, lips, and fast-twitch movements.

This makes a Sharingan user extremely powerful in hand-to-hand combat, as they are often able to read and react to moves as they are being made.

One of the more distinguishable features of the Sharingan is its ability to copy hand signs and different kinds of Jutsu. This is the power that gave Kakashi Hatake his nickname of ‘the Copy Ninja.’

The other main power that more advanced Sharingan users can perform is different kinds of Genjutsu. Not only are they able to see through the illusion, but they are also able to perform great Genjutsu that others cannot match.

The Sharingan has a very high skill ceiling, and advanced users can control and influence the actions of others.

The default Sharingan is mostly seen in the earliest parts of Naruto before the timeskip and Naruto: Shippuden. We see it used by Kakashi Hatake in almost all of his battles, as it gives him a one-up against other ninjas, as well as Sasuke throughout his career as a Genin.

It is worth noting that the Sharingan makes a user much more powerful than almost all other ninjas, and because the Sharingan Uchiha members are renowned and envied by many characters throughout the story.

Mangekyo Sharingan

So we’ve gone through the regular Sharingan, but what about its evolved form? The Mangekyo Sharingan is one of the most powerful abilities in all of the Naruto universe, and the powers gained from it are of devastating power.

The Mangekyo Sharingan is extremely rare and is only awakened by a few select members of the Uchiha Clan. For example, in the series, we only see it with a few of the main characters including Sasuke, Itachi, Madara, and Obito.

A Mangekyo Sharingan looks different from a regular Sharingan because of its varied pattern. Mangekyo Sharingan’s have patterns that are specific to the user.

For example, Sasuke’s Mangekyo looks like a star, whilst Itachi’s looks more like a shuriken. The reason why Mangekyo Sharingans are so rare is because of the method needed to awaken them.

To awaken a Mangekyo Sharingan, a user of the Sharingan must experience a moment of intense emotional distress. It usually appears through experiencing the death of a loved one – for example, Sasuke’s Mangekyo awakens after experiencing the death of his brother.

With its great price of awakening, comes incredible power.

The powers of a Mangkeyo are increased in all of the primary abilities of a Sharingan, but with many more specific abilities. Those with prowess over a Manngekyo Sharingan can use extremely powerful Genjutsu, Amaterasu (black fire that cannot be extinguished), and most importantly Susanoo.

The Susanoo, for example, is by far one of the most powerful abilities in Naruto, that is only available to Uchiha who have awakened Mangekyo Sharingan in both of their eyes.

Eternal Mangkeyo Sharingan

We wanted to add this section to explain a little about the price of the Mangekyo Sharingan. The more a user abuses it, the more damage they do to their eyes. Continual use of the Mangekyo Sharingan will eventually blind the user.

As a solution to this, there is the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan. This is achieved when the eyes of a users’ sibling are transplanted and allows them to use their Sharingan without limits.

The pattern of Eternal Mangekyo also improves and becomes more complex. In the story, only two Uchiha ever get to use the Eternal Mangekyo – Sasuke, and Madara.

Rinnegan

Rinnegan

Next up is what many Naruto fans believe to be the strongest eye power in the universe. Up until the later sections of the story, the Rinnegan is extremely rare and only seen in one character – the Sixth Paths of Pain.

The Rinnegan is recognizable by its purple color and rippled black circles which radiate out from its dot of a pupil. It is a visually striking eye power that was designed around the idea of a prophesied ninja coming down to earth from the heavens to bring either great destruction or great salvation.

The Rinnegan makes its user extremely powerful. It gives the user the opportunity of performing any Jutsu they decide – including all nature types. It also has the abilities of the Sharingan and the Byakugan. It also makes you immune to visual and sensory illusions.

What is more important to point out is the unique abilities that Rinnegan users gain access to, including ‘Deva Path’ which allows them to control gravity.

The exact list of powers that the Rinnegan gives its user is far too long for us to list here, but just know that it transforms the user to have more-or-less godlike powers.

Advanced users of the Rinnegan also have the power to control space-time, for example, Sasuke can open portals to different dimensions with his Rinnegan in Boruto, the Next Generation.

Because of its power level, you would have to imagine that the Rinnegan is very difficult to obtain within the Naruto Universe – and this is true, despite a few characters having it around the end of the story.

You can get the Rinnegan from either transplanting an existing one, eating the Sacred Chakra Fruit or by getting it directly from the spirit of the Sage of Six Paths. All of these are very difficult, which means that only a few characters ever got access to it.

The most notable Rinnegan users are Nagato, Sasuke Uchiha, Obito Uchiha and Madara Uchiha. All of which use the Dojutsu to perform incredible jutsu in some of the most devastating and important battles in the history of the Ninja World.

For example, Nagato (otherwise known as Pain) is able to destroy the entirety of the Hidden Leaf with the use of his Rinnegan, by performing the Jutsu ‘Shinra Tensei,’ or ‘Almighty push.’

Jougan

The Jougan is a newer addition to the story and one of the more mysterious and obscure Dojutsu in the Naruto Universe. It first appears in Boruto Uzumaki and is depicted as a glowing blue tiny circle in the center of the user’s eye.

The full extent of its powers is not yet known, but what we do know is that it is able to perceive chakra just like the Byakugan and the Sharingan.

In the flash-forward at the beginning of Boruto, we see a teenage Boruto able to activate the Jougan at will along with his power of Karma. Whatever the real extent of the Jougan, we can assume that it will be a very powerful tool for Boruto as he grows older and more powerful.

It is likely that Boruto has had the Jougan for his entire life, though as a child he is unable to activate it and does not seem to realize he has it until much later.

The Jougan is known by members of the Otsutsuki Clan, who make note of it when it is activated by Boruto. All Naruto fans are keeping an eye out for this one, as it has the potential to be one of the most interesting Dojustsu in the Naruto Universe.

Ketsuryūgan

Next up is a more obscure Dojutsu. The Ketsuryugan is a dojutsu that is native to those of the Chinoike Clan, easily recognizable by its red color and central purple ‘bar.’ It is only encountered a few times in the anime, and is a less powerful dojutsu than say the Rinnegan or the Sharingan.

The Ketsuryugan gives the user the ability to manipulate iron and also gives them strong genjutsu powers.

This ability to control iron allows the user to be able to control blood within other people, as well as great quantities of blood in general – which is probably the most over-powered aspect of the Dojutsu.

From this users can create blood dragons, turn people into walking bombs through manipulation of their blood, and change the appearance of others.

It’s worth noting that the Ketsuryūgan is only introduced in a side story which comes out after the conclusion of the main series. Some people don’t consider it canon in the same way as other Dojutsu.

Whether or not it will appear in future episodes of Boruto: The Next Generations, is so far not known.

Tenseigan

The final Dojutsu we will examine in this article is the Tenseigan. It is a Dojutsu only seen within The Last: Naruto the Movie, which takes place after the end of the Naruto Manga/Anime ending.

The Tenesigan is created through the combination of the Hyuga and Otsutsuki clans and is a Dojutsu that is rare and has a lot of unique powers.

Because of its nature, we don’t find out all that much about the true powers of the Tenseigan, only that it is incredibly powerful. In the movie, we saw one of its users able to create a laser beam capable of cutting the moon in two.

Because it is only seen once, many fans have been left wondering what is the true extent of its power. Let’s hope that no more bad guys get ahold of it in future episodes of Boruto!

Final Thoughts

We hope that this guide has helped you understand each and every eye power available in the Naruto Universe.

As said before, the eye powers are some of the coolest in all Anime, and Kishimoto has made some long-lasting concepts that will no doubt inspire other storytellers throughout history.

In terms of the most powerful eye power, this very much depends on the story, but out of the most common eye powers, the Rinnegan seems to generally take the crown!

Below is a short FAQ that will define some of the more complex terms that were used in this article! Happy watching!
