Be warned – there are spoilers ahead for the final season of Attack on Titan. Although we will not reveal the fate of each character from the manga, those who are not caught up with the anime may find spoilers for some arc details and huge twists.
Attack on Titan begins with an introduction to the main character and our hero – Eren Jaeger.
Eren was born on March 30th in the year 835, making him 9 years old at the time he rescued Mikasa Ackerman from her kidnappers and killed two people.
One year later, in the year 845, the Colossus Titan broke through the gate at Shiganshina and Eren lost his mother Carla at the young age of 10 years old. This was the age when Eren vowed to kill all titans, marking a huge shift in his motivations and personality as a character.
This is also the age when Eren inherited the Attack Titan and Founding Titan from his father, but he was not aware of his new Titan Shifting ability. Eren was 12 when he first joined the 104th Training Corps, and he graduated three years later at the age of 15.
So, in the year 850, Eren was 15 years old during the Battle of Trost when he discovered his Titan Shifting abilities. Eren remains 15 throughout the rest of the arcs within the Walls, right up to the end of the Return to Shiganshina arc.
Because the Titan Guillotine takes around a year to kill all the titans within Wall Maria, we can assume that Eren has turned 16 by the time the Survey Corps make it to the beach and see the ocean for the first time.
Attack on Titan then skips ahead in time to the year 854 for the next arc. Eren is now 19 years old when he makes the attack on Marley, and remains 19 until the end of the series.
Because Eren is a Titan Shifter, he is also inflicted with the Curse of Ymir which limits his lifespan to 13 years after he inherited the Attack Titan. This means that no matter what happens in the anime’s finale, Eren is fated to die at the age of 23 unless the Curse of Ymir can be undone.
Mikasa Ackerman is Eren’s closest companion and one of humanity’s strongest soldiers.
Mikasa was born on February 10th in the year 835, making her the same age as Eren. She was 9 years old when traffickers attacked her home and killed her parents, planning to sell her in the underground human trading market.
During Eren’s rescue, Mikasa awakened her Ackerman powers and became incredibly strong and fast with an unwavering instinct for survival. It was also at this age she fell in love with Eren after he showed her compassion after he and his parents took her in.
For the rest of the anime, Mikasa is the same age as Eren as they are both born in the same year. She was also 10 years old when Wall Maria fell to the titans, she joined the 104th Training Corps with Eren at the age of 12, was also 15 during the main events of the anime, and was also 19 years old during the final season.
As Mikasa is not a Titan Shifter, she is not inflicted with the Curse of Ymir so unlike Eren, she is not fated to die by a certain age and could go on to live a long life.
Armin Arlert is Eren and Mikasa’s friend from childhood and the current holder of the Colossal Titan.
Armin was born the same year as Mikasa and Eren but at the later date of November 3rd, making him the youngest of the trio. He lost his parents at an unknown age after they were executed for trying to fly over the walls in a hot air balloon. So, Armin was raised by his grandfather until the age of 10 when Wall Maria fell.
Although Armin and his grandfather escaped to safety behind Wall Rose, Armin’s grandfather was sent back into titan territory as part of a Recovery Operation that was just a suicide mission to reduce the population due to the scarcity of food and space. So, Armin had lost his only guardian between the ages of 10 and 12.
When Armin turned 12 years old, he joined the 104th Training Corps with Eren and Mikasa and graduated at the age of 15. He was also 15 during the events after the Battle of Trost and later inherited the Colossal Titan after nearly dying during the events of the Battle for Shiganshina.
Armin was also 19 years old after the time skip, and will remain that age until the end of the anime.
As Armin is a Titan Shifter, he is also inflicted with the Curse of Ymir. However, he will live to an older age than Eren as he inherited his titan at a later age. So, Armin is fated to die by the age of 28 unless the Curse of Ymir is undone.
Attack on Titan’s most popular character is Captain Levi Ackerman, one of humanity’s strongest soldiers.
Unlike with the previous characters, Levi is not given an exact age. Instead, the manga’s writer and creator, Hajime Isayama, gave rough estimates of his age at certain points in the timeline.
We have been told that Levi’s birthday is December 25th, but we have not been told the year of his birth. We are also never given an exact age or year when Levi lost his mother Kuchel and was taken in by his uncle Kenny Ackerman.
It is confirmed in the spinoff episodes Attack on Titan: No Regrets that Levi joined the Survey Corps after the fall of Wall Maria, approximately in the year 851. However, Levi’s exact age remains a mystery.
Instead, Hajime Isayama claimed that Levi was in his ‘early 30s’ during the Battle of Trost in 850. This means that throughout the main events of Attack on Titan, Levi is somewhere between the ages of 30 to 33 years. After the time skip, Levi is in his mid to late 30s by the end of the series.
Like with Mikasa, Levi is not a Titan Shifter and so is not inflicted by the Curse of Ymir.
So those are the ages of the four main characters of Attack on Titan. While Armin, Eren and Mikasa all share the exact same age, Captain Levi’s age is not definitely confirmed but roughly estimated by the manga’s creator.
Now, with the end of Attack on Titan in sight, it’s time to see just who will reach their next birthday and live to see the next year.
