Kono Subarashiii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!- or KonoSuba as it is most commonly known- is a popular series that began as a web novel before making the transition to a light novel series.
It was then adapted into three ongoing manga series, with the first coming to light in 2014, and an anime series that began in 2016. KonoSuba revolves around high school student Satou Kazuma, who spends his days doing nothing but playing video games and isolating himself from others.
On his way home from buying the latest game, Kazuma is killed in an accident and finds himself face to face with a goddess named Aqua. Aqua gives him a choice of two options: go directly to heaven, or be reincarnated into a Fantasy World to live out his gaming fantasies.
Kazuma opts for the fantasy world, where he meets several characters who join his party, including the Megumin and Darkness, both of whom Kazuma recruits unintentionally.
The ages of the characters change across the different iterations of the KonoSuba series, so with that in mind, we are going to take a look at the ages of three characters in particular from the series: Kazuma, Megumin, and Darkness
We are also going to have a look at each character individually and their roles in the KonoSuba series.
How Old Is Satou Kazuma?
In the anime and the light novel, Kazuma is 16 years old, however, he- and some of the other characters- are aged down from the web novel iteration. In this version, Kazuma is 20 years old, making him a young adult rather than a teenager.
Kazuma is relatively short for his age, measuring at 5 ft 4 inches tall. He has a slight frame, weighs around 120 pounds, and has spiky hair. In the anime, his eyes are green, and his hair is chestnut brown, but in the light novel his eyes are brown and his hair is black.
Before his death, Kazuma would often wear a green tracksuit. When taken to the Fantasy World, he dons an adventurer outfit made up of a green mantle with golden trims, dark pants, a white tunic with a gray undershirt, a brown belt and brown boots.
Kazuma is the embodiment of the Japanese term “hikikomori” before his death. The term refers to a shut-in who is not in employment or education, opting instead to spend their time indoors engaging in activities such as video games.
These people may feel afraid of going outside and becoming part of the world, or they may simply have no interest in doing so. Kazuma’s isolated life stems from being rejected by his childhood friend and first love, but his death was even more pitiful than the life he chose to lead.
Thinking he was saving a girl from being hit by a truck (which was just a slow-moving tractor), Kazuma ends up dying of shock as he believes he has been run over.
Kazuma gains confidence when he enters the Fantasy World, initially becoming more outgoing and more willing to be social due to the prospect of living in an RPG world.
His optimism quickly starts to falter when the reality of being an adventurer- risking his life constantly for very little pay- sets in. He has a sarcastic and blunt attitude, particularly towards his own team.
His reclusive personality from when he was alive still comes through at times too, such as when he feels nervous meeting Darkness and his tendency to get depressed and irritated easily. Kazuma is voiced by Fukushima Jun in the anime and by Arnie Pantoja in the English Dub.
How Old Is Darkness?
Darkness is 18 at the beginning of KonoSuba, but her character is currently 19 years old. Like Kazuma, she is aged down from her appearance in the web novel, in which she is 22 years old.
Darkness is a graceful and beautiful character with bright blue eyes, pale skin, and blonde hair that she wears tied up with a braid in a long ponytail. She also has spiky bangs and red hair clips that she uses to pin back the hair that falls at the side of her face.
She has a look that is reminiscent of a fantasy warrior, wearing silver armor made up of tasset, sabatons, metal greaves, a shoulder plate, and a wing-like cloth that sits on her right shoulder.
Furthermore, she also wears a cuirass with a red bow and has a yellow and black, silver-trimmed, sleeveless dress that she wears underneath her armor.
Darkness- whose full name is Dustiness Ford Lalatina- is a character whose outward appearance and actions are a total contrast to her actual personality. On the outside, she appears graceful and dignified thanks to her noble background.
She will often preach to others about the importance of shielding and protecting others and comes across as a mature, respectable and serious young woman. This is far from the truth though, as underneath her prim and proper exterior, Darkness is something of a masochistic pervert.
Darkness is considered to be brave and selfless by those around her, as she is always putting herself in harms way to protect others. Although she does genuinely want to protect people, she seems to do so only for her own sordid enjoyment of the pain that fighting brings her.
Her masochism- which is typically played for laughs- is her most prominent trait, but she does have a caring side and some genuine courage too. She is also pretty poor at sword fighting- despite her knight like appearance-, frequently missing her targets even if they are right in front of her.
The obvious embarrassment she feels for her ineptitude suggests that she does actually want to be the gallant knight that is so good at pretending to be. Darkness is voiced by Kayano Ai in the anime and Cristina Vee in the English dub.
How Old Is Megumin?
Like Kazuma and Darkness, Megumin is aged down in most of the iterations of KonoSuba, except for the web novel. She is still the youngest of the main trio though, being 17 in the web novel and currently 15 in the other versions of the series (she was 13 at the beginning of the series).
Megumin’s youth is emphasized by her large reddish brown eyes, her slim and petite frame and her doll like facial features. Her hair is shoulder-length and dark brown (it is black rather than brown in the light novel).
She is an Arch Wizard and her outfit is indicative of this as she dons a pointy witch hat, a brown cloak with a golden trim, a long sleeved red mini dress with golden trims and orange and gold boots.
She also has some witch like accessories, such as black fingerless gloves, a black choker and one thigh high black stocking (her other leg has a long bandage in the place of a stocking). Megumin also carries a staff with her that has a floating, red gem, further cementing her stereotypical witchiness.
Megumin has a tendency to come across as arrogant and loud- boasting about her magical powers frequently- as well as quite eccentric, but she is quick to drop this act when she finds herself in a difficult situation.
Megumin’s young age is made all the more apparent by her immature and somewhat childish nature. For example, she has a child-like obsession with explosion magic and often uses all of her resources in order to invest in just one explosive magic spell.
Despite this, she will get very angry when she is treated like a child. Even with this immature nature, Megumin is still considered to be the member of the group with the most common sense. She is voiced by Takahashi Rie in the anime and Erica Mendez in the English dub.
So there you have the ages of Kazuma, Megumin and Darkness from across the different variations of KonoSuba, as well as a bit of information about them as characters.
One thing that is certain, after this quick dive into each one of them, is that they are certainly one of the more eccentric and unlikely trios in anime!
