Nezuko Kamado is one of the main characters in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, the epic and manga series that has taken the world by storm.
There is no doubt that Nezuko is one of the most unique characters in the story—being part-human and part-demon.
And, because of this, there have been a lot of questions about Nezuko regarding her powers, her status as a Demon Slayer, and how she became part-demon in the first place.
Nezuko does not talk often and spends most of her time sleeping. She is carried around in a box by her brother, Tanjiro Kamado, the main protagonist, and mostly comes out only to help Tanjiro and his friends fight the demons.
But is Nezuko Kamado a Demon Slayer and an official member of the Demon Slayer Corps? Has she been accepted by the Hashira and Kagaya Ubuyashiki, the leader of the Demon Slayer Corps?
If you are looking for the answer, we explain everything you want to know about Nezuko Kamado down below.
Who Is Nezuko?
Nezuko Kamado is Tanjiro Kamado’s younger sister. She is twelve years old, and easily recognizable by her pink eyes, long black hair, pink kimono worn under a dark brown haori, and bamboo muzzle.
At the very start of the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba main story, Nezuko is a regular girl – kind and caring, thoughtful, and principled.
However, when the Kamado family is attacked by an unknown demon, Nezuko is the only survivor. Tanjiro returns to find her, but not as she was before – she has transformed into a demon and immediately attacks Tanjiro.
Later in the story, it is revealed that the demon who attacked the Kamado family is Muzan, the main antagonist and leader of all the demons.
Muzan has the ability to turn any person into a demon using his blood, and this is what happens to Nezuko, even though Muzan didn’t intend for it.
Despite this, Nezuko managed to retain some of her human side. This is encouraged by Tanjiro who, despite being attacked by her, shows her compassion and even protects her from Giyu Tomioka, one of the Hashira.
Nezuko recognizes and remembers Tanjiro and, from then on, manages to suppress her demon tendencies to some degree.
What Type Of Demon Is Nezuko?
From early on in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, it is clear that Nezuko Kamado is not a normal demon. She is able to hold herself back from attacking humans, and even fights against her own kind.
This is due to her recognizing Tanjiro, her brother, when he showed her compassion at the very start of the story.
Nezuko is both human and demon. She has a humane side, but also displays the traits and powerful abilities of a demon. Due to this, she is often considered to be “the chosen demon”.
Nezuko’s strong-mindedness is shown in one memorable scene in chapter 45 of the manga and episode 22 of the anime. In this scene, the main characters meet the Hashira, who are immediately distrustful of Nezuko. One of the Hashira, Sanemi Shinazugawa, tests Nezuko’s willpower by stabbing her and goading her with blood, which Nezuko manages to resist.
But despite showing great strength in being able to suppress her demon side, Nezuko continues to wear a bamboo muzzle to make sure that she doesn’t attack other humans or hurt herself.
In addition, Nezuko needs to sleep a lot, and for long periods, to keep her energy and strength, which, unlike other demons, she does not get from human blood.
Does Nezuko Become A Demon Slayer?
Tanjiro Kamado and Zenitsu Agatsuma officially become Demon Slayers in episode 5 of the anime after passing Final Selection.
Another main character of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiaba, Inosuke Hashibira, is already a Demon Slayer when Tanjiro and Zenitsu meet him for the first time.
But whether Nezuko is a Demon Slayer has been widely debated.
The truth is that Nezuko is a Demon Slayer, having been accepted into the Demon Slayer Corps by Rengoku Kyojuro, the Flame Hashira.
This happens in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mugen Train, the anime movie that directly follows the events of season one, and in the Mugen Train Arc of the adapted manga of the same name.
In his dying moments after fighting Akaza, Rengoku tells Tanjiro:
“I believe in your little sister. I accept her as a member of the Demon Slayer Corps. I saw her bleeding as she protected the humans inside the train. Anyone who risks their lives fighting demons to protect humans is a rightful member of the Demon Slayer Corps, no matter what anyone else says.”
Kyojuro Rengoku was considered to be one of the most powerful Hashira. And although he was not the leader, it is fair to say that the other Hashira, despite being skeptical about Nezuko, will accept the blessing he gave Nezuko.
What Are Nezuko’s Powers?
So, what are Nezuko’s powers?
Being part-demon, Nezuko shares the same ability as demons, called Blood Demon Art.
Blood Demon Art varies between demons but, in Nezuko’s case, she has enhanced strength, quick regeneration, and the ability to change her size – the reason she is also able to fit inside Tanjiro’s carrying box.
In addition to these powers, Nezuko has abilities that set her apart from other demons. These include resisting human blood (as well as attacking humans), and being able to stay out in direct sunlight.
Nezuko also has an awakened form, known as berserk mode. In this form, Nezuko changes her appearance slightly and becomes more powerful.
But what is most special about Nezuko’s powers is that she frequently uses them to help Tanjiro, fusing her powers with his Breathing Style to overwhelm and take down powerful demons.
To conclude, Nezuko Kamado is in fact a Demon Slayer and member of the Demons Slayer Corps. Not only does she help her brother Tanjiro slay demons, but she was accepted into the Demon Slayer Corps by Kyojuro Rengoku in his dying moments.
Despite this, Nezuko is still part-demon. She uses Blood Demon Art and displays similar traits with demons, but is able to suppress the desire for human blood. Also unlike demons, Nezuko can also stay out in direct sunlight.
